The difference is one step on the production line: an original portion is sprayed with moisture after it is packed, and a white portion is not. That single step is why an original portion tastes of something from the first second and runs more, and why a white one starts slower, lasts longer and stays cleaner under the lip. Everything else about the two is the same snus.
This is one of the few places in the snus world where the marketing words correspond to a real, documented manufacturing difference — and where you can read the definition in the maker’s own words rather than a shop’s. Here it is, with the sources, and then what it actually changes for you.
The one difference that defines them
Skruf, which makes both, describes its own line in plain Swedish. If the portion is to be a brown one, “Om snuset ska bli brun portion får det sig en dusch innan packning, detta för att vara vät och därmed få sin karaktäristiska smak från första sekund” — it gets a shower before packing, so that it is wet and therefore gets its characteristic flavour from the first second. The white one skips that: “Den vita prillan åker däremot direkt till dosan” — the white portion goes straight to the can instead. And the company states the distinction outright: “Skillnaden mellan vitt och brunt snus är just duschningen och vätan” — the difference between white and brown snus is precisely the showering and the wetness.
Swedish Match’s European patent for oral pouched products puts the same thing in industrial language: “Post-moisturized pouches are sometimes referred to as ‘original snus’. Non-post-moisturized pouched products are sometimes referred to as ‘white snus’.” Two companies, two documents, one mechanism. There is no separate tobacco blend, no different cut, no extra ingredient — just whether the finished portion gets wetted on the outside.
Worth noting what that does not mean. A white portion is not dry snus. The patent gives the moisture content of the finished pouched product as “normally within the range of from 25 to 55% w/w based on the weight of the pouched product” — the snus inside a white portion is still moist. It is the pouch surface that is left alone.
What that changes in your mouth
Three things, in order of how much you will notice them.
Drip. This is the one people actually switch for. Skruf’s own explanation: “Att den vita inte är vätt gör att den inte rinner lika mycket och därmed upplevs av vissa som en fräschare produkt” — because the white one is not wetted it does not run as much, and so some people experience it as a fresher product. A moistened pouch begins shedding flavour and liquid immediately; a dry-surfaced one has to wait for your own saliva to work through the fleece.
Onset. An original portion delivers flavour “from the first second”, in Skruf’s words, because the wetting has already started the process before the can was closed. A white portion has a lag — a minute or two of very little, then a build. If you are used to originals, a white portion feels like it is not working. It is; it is just behind.
Duration. The flip side of a slower start is a longer tail. That is the standard account and it follows from the mechanism, but I want to be honest about the sourcing: I could not find a published head-to-head measurement of nicotine release from an original portion against a white portion of the same product. The measured release data that exists is for white portions on their own. In a dissolution study published in Separations in 2022, General Portion Snus White Large released “9.2 ± 4.7% and 29.9 ± 11.2%” of its nicotine at 15 and 60 minutes, with an in-mouth extracted fraction of “8.0 ± 3.3% and 31.8 ± 10.8%”. Slow, and mostly unfinished at an hour. Two of that paper’s four authors were employees of Swedish Match North Europe, which markets the product, and a third had received funding from the same company. So treat “white lasts longer” as a well-founded inference from the manufacturing difference, not as a number anyone has published.
Staining. Secondary, but real: a wetted brown pouch is wet tobacco liquid against your teeth from the moment it goes in.
The distinction is formal enough for a federal regulator
If you have ever wondered whether “white portion” is a marketing flourish, the answer is on the FDA’s books. When FDA issued modified risk granted orders for General Snus on 7 November 2024, the authorised products were named individually, and the portion type is part of the product name: “General Portion Original Large” and “General Portion White Large” are two separate authorisations, as are “General Dry Mint Portion Original Mini”, “General Classic Blend Portion White Large-12ct”, “General Mint Portion White Large”, “General Nordic Mint Portion White Large-12ct”, “General Wintergreen Portion White Large” and “General Loose”. Those orders run to 7 November 2032.
FDA’s authorised claim for them, verbatim, is that “Using General Snus instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.” Read the scope precisely: it is a closed list of named conditions, and it is conditional on using snus instead of cigarettes. It is not a statement that snus is safe, and it is not a cessation authorisation.
The same FDA review paperwork carries a useful incidental fact about formats: it lists “General Dry Mint Portion Original Mini, smokeless tobacco, snus portions, 0.21 oz (6g)” and “General Portion White Large, smokeless tobacco, snus portions, 0.9 oz (24g)”. A mini can holds a quarter of what a large can holds.
Reading the can
The words on a Swedish can are doing two jobs at once — portion type and format — and they are usually stacked in that order.
| What it says | Portion type | Format | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Portion / Brun portion | Post-moistened | Usually large | Immediate flavour, most drip, shortest tail |
| White Portion / Vit portion | Not post-moistened | Large or slim | Slow start, least drip, longest tail |
| White Dry / Dry Portion | Not post-moistened, lower moisture still | Often mini | Driest in the hand, least drip of all |
| Loose / Lös | No pouch at all | You form the prilla | Fastest and messiest; covered separately |
| Slim / Large / Mini | — | Size only | Mini targets ~0.5 g, large ~0.9 g |
The mini and large weights there are Swedish Match’s own targets from the patent: “Ref. 1” at “0.5 ± 0.2” g and 27 × 14 mm is “referred to as ‘mini'”, and “Ref. 2” at “0.9 ± 0.2” g and 34 × 18 mm is “referred to as ‘large'”. Format and portion type are independent choices — a white slim and a white large differ in size, not in how they were finished. If format is what you are trying to sort out, that is its own article: slim vs mini vs large, compared.
What is identical between them
The tobacco, the pasteurisation and the regulatory position. Skruf’s description of its process — the raw tobacco milled to “ett finkornigt pulver-råtobak”, stored in silos, then pasteurised “för att dels ta död på eventuella mikroorganismer men också för att få fram sin speciella karaktär”, then mixed “med salt och vatten” — is the same up to the point where the shower either happens or does not.
Nicotine and pH are properties of the blend, not of the portion type, and Swedish law requires the numbers to be on the pack: Förordning 2022:1263, 11 §, requires “uppgift om innehåll av nikotin i produkten och fördelning per dos” — the nicotine content and its distribution per dose. Notably, Sweden sets no statutory ceiling on how high that figure may go.
And the availability is identical, because it has nothing to do with the portion: under Article 17 of the EU Tobacco Products Directive, “Member States shall prohibit the placing on the market of tobacco for oral use, without prejudice to Article 151 of the Act of Accession of Austria, Finland and Sweden.” The Directive’s definition reaches “all tobacco products for oral use, except those intended to be inhaled or chewed, made wholly or partly of tobacco, in powder or in particulate form … particularly those presented in sachet portions or porous sachets”. So both types are sold legally in Sweden and — via that accession exemption — essentially nowhere else in the EU, white or brown alike. Norway, outside the EU, allows tobacco snus while refusing tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which is the mirror image of most of Europe.
Which should you actually buy
My own view, stated as a view: if you are new to snus, start with a white portion. The lower drip removes the single most off-putting thing about a first tin, and the slower onset is easier to judge than a wall of flavour in the first two seconds. If you have used snus before and found white portions insipid, that is the lag rather than the product, and an original portion will give you what you are missing.
- First tin ever: white portion, slim or large.
- Want flavour immediately: original portion.
- Hate the drip: white, and white dry if white is still too wet.
- Long session, one portion: white.
- Worried about staining: white.
- Coming from nicotine pouches: white portion is the nearer relative — the modern all-white pouch is a descendant of this idea, not of the brown one.
FAQ
Does a white portion contain less nicotine? No. Nicotine belongs to the blend, and both portion types are made from the same one. What differs is how quickly it comes out.
Is white portion the same as an all-white nicotine pouch? No. A white portion is snus — it contains tobacco. An all-white pouch usually does not. We cover the term in what ‘all-white’ really means.
Why does my white portion turn brown anyway? Your saliva does what the factory shower would have done, just later.
Is white drier in the tin? Its surface is. The snus inside sits in the same 25–55% moisture range.
Does white portion last longer? That is the expected consequence of not being pre-wetted, and it matches user accounts, but no published head-to-head measurement of the two portion types exists that I could find. I would not quote a number at you.
Is either one safer? No. Neither the FDA orders nor anything else distinguishes them on risk, and the authorised claim is a comparison with cigarettes, not a safety statement.
