First look, based on manufacturer specifications — not a scored review, because I have not used this product. General White Portion is Swedish Match’s white-portion tobacco snus: a sealed, lightly moistened pouch of pasteurised Swedish snus in the brand’s flagship bergamot-and-tobacco style, sold as “General Snus White” in the United States and as General White Portion in the Nordics. It is one of only eight smokeless products FDA has both authorised for sale and permitted to carry a reduced-risk claim.
No scores below, and no tasting notes. What follows is what the manufacturer publishes, what it does not, and what the regulatory record says — because on this particular product the gap between those three is the most interesting thing about it.
What it is
A white portion is a pouch that was never post-moisturised after sealing, or was only lightly moistened. Swedish Match’s own description, from a company news item dated 9 March 2009: “White Portion is a unique technology in which each portion is moistened in such a way that seepage is reduced while the flavor lasts longer.” The same item calls General White Portion “one of our most appreciated products” and notes it was “the second member of the General family to have star-designed portion packages”, after General Onyx.
The underlying snus is pasteurised rather than fermented — Swedish Match’s production page describes the heat step as “known as pasteurization” and the leaf as “air and sun-dried” — which is what separates Swedish snus from American fermented moist snuff. The full process is in how Swedish snus is made, and the white-versus-original distinction in white portion vs original portion.
The naming is a mess and worth untangling before you shop. Swedish Match’s US brand site sells it as “General Snus White”. FDA’s filings call the same product “General Portion White Large”. Nordic retailers list it as General White Portion, and some as “General Classic White Portion”. These are the same product family under three naming conventions; the US and Nordic packs are not identical, because they sit under different packaging regimes.
What the manufacturer publishes — and what it doesn’t
This is the honest part of the page, and it is unusual. Swedish Match publishes almost none of the specifications you would want. Its Nordic consumer site is geo-restricted to Swedish IP addresses and returns nothing from outside Sweden; its corporate site carries process and standards pages but no product catalogue at all; and its 2024 annual report does not mention General once — the only product named in it is ZYN. The one reachable brand-owner product catalogue is the US site.
From generalsnus.com, then, and this is the entirety of what the maker states: “General Snus White (8mg), 24 Pouches”, described as a “vibrant blend features a complex, tobacco taste” (the grammar is theirs). The ingredients: “Water, Tobacco, Taste Enhancer (Salt), Humectant (Propylene Glycol), pH Adjusters (Sodium Carbonate and Magnesium Carbonate), Natural and Artificial Flavors, Artificial Sweetener (Acesulfame K)”. The pack warning: “WARNING: This product can cause gum disease and tooth loss.” And an age line: “General is for use by adults 21+ in the US who use tobacco and nicotine products.”
Not published by the manufacturer anywhere I could reach: nicotine in mg per gram, pouch weight, can net weight, pH, moisture, tobacco country of origin, or a current Nordic flavour description. Every one of those figures circulating online for this product is retailer data. I am not going to launder it into a spec sheet.

The strength question, and three numbers that look contradictory
You will see 8 mg, 8 mg/g and 14–15 mg/g attached to this product, and they are not in conflict once you know what each one is measuring.
8 mg per pouch is the manufacturer’s US figure, and it is the one that matters to a user — it is nicotine per portion, on the can.
14–15 mg/g dry weight comes from Swedish Match’s own analytical data, submitted to FDA in a consultant’s report accompanying its modified-risk application (ENVIRON International Corporation, prepared for Swedish Match, March 2014). The table gives 14 mg/g dry weight for the Mint, Nordic Mint and Classic Blend “pouched snus white large” products and 15 mg/g for the unflavoured large product. Read the basis: dry weight. Snus is roughly half water, so 14–15 mg/g dry is arithmetically consistent with something near 8 mg/g as-is — which is why the Nordic retail figure of 8 mg/g and the US figure of 8 mg per pouch can both be roughly right for a ~0.9 g pouch. One honest caveat: the row for the unflavoured product came back merged with an adjacent row in the document I read, so I would state this as “14–15 mg/g dry weight across the range” rather than pinning a figure to this exact SKU.
The same report gives pouch weights for three of the flavoured large white portions — 0.943 g, 0.918 g and 0.881 g — which tells you something useful in itself: Swedish Match’s “large” white portions are not all the same weight, and none of them is the 1 g the company cited publicly in 2004. If you want the general principle behind all of this, it is in mg per pouch vs mg per gram.
What nobody has published: a peer-reviewed measurement of General White Portion specifically. The closest is Lawler et al.’s chemical analysis of snus products from the United States and northern Europe (PLOS ONE, 15 January 2020; funding statement: “The authors have no support or funding to report”), which includes a General product but whose per-product values sit in tables I could not open. So there is no independent check on the manufacturer’s own numbers for this can.
Where you can legally buy it
Sweden: legal, minimum age 18 under the Act on tobacco and similar products (SFS 2018:2088, 5 kap. 17 §). This is the product’s home market and the only EU market where it can be sold.
Norway: legal, age 18, but with two constraints that change the pack. Helsedirektoratet’s guidance states “En pakning porsjonssnus skal inneholde minst 20 porsjoner og 15 gram” — a portion-snus pack must hold at least 20 portions and 15 grams — and “Det er forbudt å innføre eller selge tobakksvarer i Norge som ikke har standardisert innpakning”, so a Norwegian can carries no brand livery. Norway’s implementation of the EU tobacco directive took effect on 30 March 2026.
The rest of the EU: banned. Directive 2014/40/EU Article 17: “Member States shall prohibit the placing on the market of tobacco for oral use, without prejudice to Article 151 of the Act of Accession of Austria, Finland and Sweden.” Article 2(8) defines tobacco for oral use as products “not intended to be inhaled or chewed…in powder or in particulate form…particularly those presented in sachet portions or porous sachets” — which describes this product exactly.
United Kingdom: banned. The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 (SI 2016/507), regulation 17, in full: “No person may produce or supply tobacco for oral use.”
United States: legal, age 21, and specifically authorised — see below.
If you are in a market where it cannot be sold, this page is not a route around that. No seller is named here, and none will be.
Regulatory status in the United States
General White Portion is in a very small club, and it is worth being precise about what that means.
First, premarket authorisation. FDA’s list of premarket tobacco product marketing granted orders (content current as of 28 March 2024) records eight smokeless products granted to Swedish Match North America, Inc. on 10 November 2015, including “General Portion White Large”. So unlike most of the nicotine products this site covers, it is not in the grey zone of unauthorised marketing — it has an order.
Second, and rarer, a modified-risk order. Per FDA’s page on the applications (content current as of 17 June 2025), the same eight products were authorised in October 2019 to carry this claim, and the orders were renewed on 7 November 2024, expiring 7 November 2032:
“Using General Snus instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.”
Read that claim exactly as written, because its scope is narrow in three ways. It is a closed list of six named conditions, not a general statement about risk. It is conditional on substitution for cigarettes — “instead of cigarettes” — not on use alongside them or by someone who does not smoke. And an authorised claim is a permission to make a statement in marketing, not a finding that the product is safe; FDA earlier denied one of the requests in these applications, in December 2016, and deferred others before the 2019 authorisation. Nothing about that order makes snus safe, and this page does not say it does.
On import enforcement: Swedish Match entities do appear on FDA import alert 98-06, but only for the Volt line. No General-branded product is on that red list.
Who this suits
On specification alone, this is a middle-strength tobacco snus with the category’s most recognisable flavour profile, in a format designed to drip less than an original portion and hold flavour longer. If you are coming from nicotine pouches, note that this is real tobacco — darker, earthier, and a different mouthfeel entirely from an all-white pouch.
It suits someone who wants the reference Swedish snus rather than an unusual one, who prefers less seepage than an original portion gives, and who is in a market where it is lawfully sold. Its unusual regulatory position also means an American buyer gets something rare: a smokeless product with both a marketing order and a reduced-risk authorisation, which is not true of most cans on a US shelf.
It suits you less if you want a published spec sheet. For a product this established, the absence of manufacturer data on nicotine per gram, pouch weight, pH and moisture is genuinely poor, and I would rather say so than fill the gap with numbers scraped off a shop.
Alternatives worth comparing
- General Portion Original Large — the post-moisturised version of the same blend, also FDA-authorised and MRTP-covered. More immediate release, more seepage.
- Skruf Original White — a white portion with actual published specs: 0.9 g per pouch, 12 mg/g, 11 mg per portion, 24 pouches, 21.6 g can. Not available in the US.
- A tobacco-free all-white pouch — if what appeals is the dryness and the tidiness rather than tobacco, start with what “all-white” really means and the master ranking.
- Loose snus — the same tobacco without the pouch; see loose vs portion snus.

Sourcing note. Swedish Match’s Nordic consumer site is geo-restricted to Swedish IP addresses and could not be read; several plausible paths on its corporate site serve a financial-reports page instead of the requested content; and the US brand site’s FAQ returned no body text on repeated attempts. Where a figure above came from a retailer rather than the manufacturer, I have said so rather than presenting it as a specification.
