Why this one is worth a page before it is worth a score
ZYN Wintergreen 6 mg is not a new product, and in most respects it is the most ordinary item in the category: a dry white pouch from the brand that defined the American market. What makes it worth writing about now is that it sits inside two separate FDA decisions, one of which is unique to ZYN and is frequently described wrongly.
So this page is a documentation exercise. When I have used the product, the scores go on and this notice comes off.

The authorisation, stated precisely
On 16 January 2025 the FDA authorised 20 ZYN products: ten flavours — Chill, Cinnamon, Citrus, Coffee, Cool Mint, Menthol, Peppermint, Smooth, Spearmint and Wintergreen — each at 3 mg and 6 mg. They were the first nicotine pouch products the agency had ever authorised. Wintergreen 6 mg is one of them.
The FDA attached a sentence to that decision which I am going to quote in full, because it is routinely left out of the marketing that followed:
“While today’s actions permit these specific tobacco products to be legally marketed in the U.S. to adults 21 and older, it does not mean these tobacco products are safe, nor are they ‘FDA approved.'”
The modified risk order, which is a different thing
On 30 June 2026 the FDA granted the same 20 ZYN products a modified risk tobacco product order. This is a separate authorisation with a separate evidentiary standard, and it permits one specific claim and no other:
“Using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.”
Four things about that order are easy to get wrong, and all four matter for anyone reading a shelf-talker.
It runs five years. The order is time-limited and renewable, and the FDA has said it may be withdrawn if there is a significant increase in youth uptake or if continued marketing stops benefiting population health.
It is comparative, not absolute. The claim is about ZYN instead of cigarettes. It says nothing about ZYN instead of nothing. The FDA’s own accompanying language is explicit: “There is no safe tobacco product, and those who do not use tobacco products should not start.”
Quitting still ranks above switching. In the agency’s words, for adults who currently smoke, “fully quitting the use of all forms of tobacco products would most benefit their health”, while switching completely “may reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals found in cigarettes.”
It does not extend to ZYN ULTRA. The moist ULTRA line, authorised 21 August 2026, has a marketing authorisation but not a modified risk order. If you see the risk claim applied to an ULTRA can, it has travelled further than the FDA allowed it to.
Where Wintergreen 6 mg sits in the range
Six milligrams is ZYN’s upper standard strength and, after the September 2026 range expansion, the middle of a four-step dry ladder: 1.5 mg, 3 mg, 6 mg and 8 mg. Above that sits the separate moist ULTRA line at 9 mg and 11 mg.
For anyone coming from another brand, be careful with the number. Milligrams per pouch is a statement of how much nicotine is in the pouch, not how much reaches you or how fast. Delivery depends on the pouch base, moisture, pH and — as the research published this month underlines — on how the individual actually uses it. Wintergreen as a flavour category is worth one factual note that has nothing to do with taste: it is a long-established American smokeless flavour rather than a modern-oral invention, which is why it appears in almost every US pouch range and in almost none of the Scandinavian ones.
What I cannot tell you yet
This is the honest part of a first look, and it is the larger part.
- How it tastes. No notes, no comparisons, no “cooler than X”.
- How the nicotine arrives. Onset, peak and duration are use-dependent and I have no measurements.
- Fit and comfort under the lip. Pouch dimensions, dryness and seam quality are things you learn by wearing one.
- Moisture behaviour over a session, and whether the dry format runs out of flavour before it runs out of nicotine.
- Batch consistency. Meaningful only across several cans over time.
Every one of those is a scoring category on this site, which is exactly why there are no scores here.

If you already use pouches in the United States and you want to know whether Wintergreen 6 mg is legally and regulatorily clean: it is among the most thoroughly documented products in the category — authorised by name, covered by a modified risk order, made by a subsidiary of a company that reports its pouch volumes publicly.
If you are trying to decide whether you will enjoy it, this page cannot help you yet, and I would rather say so than invent an impression.
